Chances are you could be up against a plethora of other candidates – what really makes that resume of yours stand out?

With thousands of resumes coming our way regularly, we’ve seen some pretty interesting things. With that being said we’ve created our “Top 5 Resume Tips” to better help you, a family member, or friend’s success in a job search. Without further ado, let’s get to the list!

1. Design Does Matter

The design of your resume must highlight the most important information about your work experience, skills and education. At first glance this information forms the image that employers have of your skills and abilities.

2. Content is King

This one would seem pretty obvious, but here it is on our top 5 list at number two. Be sure to include enough information, but not too much, to best present yourself to an interviewer. Short and sweet can go a long way, too. Try not to have pages upon pages of irrelevant job experience.

3. Identify and Address Employer Needs

Another common resume mistake is the almighty “Generic Resume”, which is simply a non-targeted version of your resume that is sent to everyone under the sun. By creating multiple versions of your resume, you can cater towards specific job opportunities and roles – giving you an edge over the generic resume population.

4. Tap into those Keywords

Was there something specific the possible soon-to-be employer is looking for? Try to include any ‘keywords’ or ‘buzz phrases’ that are relevant to the position being offered. Not only does it make you appear more qualified, but that you also have done your homework.

5. Paint the Picture

Ever get a callback for a job with less salary than what you were expecting? This can be common and happens when we don’t properly identify ourselves – via skill set, experience, etc. Make it clear what you’re looking for! Employment is a two-way relationship.
